CONNECTING CANDIDATES, CAUSES, AND VOTERS

500,000 races.
Most of them
uncontested.

Down-ballot elections shape your schools, your streets, your safety — and most of them happen with no one running against the incumbent. OurVoteToday is changing that with tools to market events, gather feedback and strengthen networks.

See Why It Matters
90% of regional races went uncontested in 2024 70% of 2024 races went uncontested — an all-time high One candidate isn't a choice — it's a default Extremes fill the vacuum when no one runs 74% of local races went uncontested in 2024 Half of state legislature seats are won by default Your school board. Your DA. Your judge. Probably uncontested. The ballot box doesn't work if only one name is on it 10% of 2023 races had zero candidates at all Democrats contest fewer races than Republicans — every cycle Accountability disappears when no one challenges the incumbent Uncontested doesn't mean unopposed — it means nobody showed up Local government runs your schools, streets, and courts. Most of it runs unopposed. Democracy wasn't designed for one-candidate elections The race that changes everything might be on your ballot right now Running is free. Losing by default isn't. The most important race in your community probably has no opponent Someone has to run. Why not you? Show up. File. Run. It's that simple. OurVoteToday is changing that.
500,000+ elected offices in the United States

From school boards and water districts to county judges and transit commissioners — half a million elected positions shape daily life in America. Most voters have never heard of them.

82% of county races went uncontested in 2024
61% of city races

When there's only one name on the ballot, voters don't choose — they inherit. Extremes fill the vacuum. Accountability disappears. And the Party loses the infrastructure it needs to win the races that matter.

#1 Democrats are the most prominent no-shows

It's not that people don't care. It's that running feels impossible without the right tools, the right network, and the right support. That's exactly what OurVoteToday was built to fix.

How we got here.

1990s

Local elections start losing the room

As presidential and congressional races dominate media coverage and Party resources, down-ballot races begin to be treated as afterthoughts. Recruitment slows. Funding dries up.

2010

The redistricting wave nobody saw coming

Republicans run coordinated campaigns for state legislatures and county offices in 2010 — and win. They control the redraw of congressional maps for the next decade. Democrats are largely absent from the races that made it possible.

2016–2020

School boards become the new frontline

Organized groups begin targeting school board and library board races specifically because they're easy to win uncontested. Curriculum, book access, and health policy shift — precinct by precinct, with almost no opposition.

Today

500,000 offices. 70% uncontested. The window is open.

The same structural gap that allowed the losses of the last two decades is still wide open. But now there are tools to close it.

"Uncontested races are rising at every level of government — and 2024 was the worst year on record."

— BallotReady / Ballotpedia, 2024
